Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has formally requested the Union Minister of Education, Dharmendra Pradhan, to consider rescheduling the UGC NET exam slated for January 2024. The exam, which is currently set to take place on January 17, coincides with Pongal, one of Tamil Nadu's most significant and widely celebrated festivals.

In a letter addressed to the Union Minister, Stalin highlighted the importance of Pongal as not just a cultural celebration but also a time when families come together to honor traditions. The festival, spanning four days, sees participation from people across all walks of life in the state, making it challenging for candidates to focus on an exam during this period.

"The overlap of UGC NET with Pongal has caused anxiety among aspirants in Tamil Nadu," Stalin wrote, emphasizing the need for sensitivity toward regional festivals while scheduling national-level exams. He further added that the move to reschedule the exam would ensure fairness and convenience for candidates from the state, allowing them to balance their cultural commitments with academic responsibilities.

The Chief Minister's appeal underscores the importance of accommodating cultural diversity in policymaking. Candidates and educators have also expressed hope that the central authorities will heed this request and provide an alternative date for the exam.

As of now, there has been no official response from the Union Ministry of Education or the National Testing Agency (NTA), which oversees the UGC NET exam. However, the demand to revise the schedule has sparked widespread discussion, with many supporting the need for cultural inclusivity in national examinations.

This is a developing story, and updates are expected as the Ministry evaluates the request.
